Africa: AU, U.S. Envoy Discuss Aussom's Future Amid Funding Uncertainty

AllAfrica, republishing a Shabelle Media Network report from Mogadishu dated July 24, 2026, said the African Union’s senior representative for Somalia met with the acting U.S. ambassador to discuss the future of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM, amid concerns about funding. The talks took place at AUSSOM headquarters in the Somali capital.

According to the report, Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia and head of AUSSOM, held discussions with Acting U.S. Ambassador Davis Justin. The agenda included Somalia’s security environment, AUSSOM’s mandate, recent developments on the ground and the possible consequences of changes affecting the AU mission.

Shabelle reported that the two sides also discussed ways to deepen cooperation between the African Union and the United States in support of peace, security and stability in Somalia. The meeting comes as AUSSOM faces financial pressure, with AU officials warning that a lack of predictable, long-term funding could make it harder to sustain current operations and future AU troop deployments.

The issue matters because AUSSOM is part of international support for Somalia’s security transition and efforts against Al-Shabaab. The report said funding uncertainty has raised worries about the mission’s ability to maintain operations while Somalia works toward taking full responsibility for national security. Both sides, according to Shabelle, emphasized the need for continued international backing and coordination to protect security gains and support longer-term stability.
