Africa: AU to Push for Financial Reforms, Debt Relief At IMF-World Bank Meetings

What the report says
The African Union plans to use the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, to press for changes to the global financial system, better debt resolution tools and greater financial self-reliance for Africa. According to Capital FM’s report distributed by AllAfrica, the meetings are scheduled for October 12-18 and will give the AU a platform to promote its priorities on development financing, tax cooperation and regional financial integration.
The AU said it will host four side events from October 13 to 16. These sessions are expected to focus on international tax cooperation, putting African Union financial institutions into operation, enabling instant cross-border payments and improving mechanisms for resolving debt. The organization said these discussions are part of broader efforts to reform the international financial architecture and unlock more resources for the continent.
The debt issue is especially important for African governments that are trying to balance repayment obligations with spending on infrastructure, public services and economic growth. The report also said the AU wants African countries to have a stronger role in shaping global tax rules and to expand domestic resource mobilization.
More broadly, the planned discussions reflect ongoing African efforts to improve financial connectivity, strengthen regional trade and increase access to development funds. The outcome of the meetings could influence how African states engage with the IMF, the World Bank and other international financial institutions on debt sustainability and financing priorities.
