What the report says

The African Union and regional economic communities have signed a new memorandum of understanding to improve coordination in the use of the African Standby Force, according to a report distributed by AllAfrica from Capital FM. The agreement is meant to help the AU and its regional partners respond more effectively to peace and security challenges across the continent.

The signing took place during the Fifth Policy Session of the African Union Inter-Regional Knowledge Exchange on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention, held alongside the AU Mid-Year Coordination Summit in El Alamein, Egypt. The session focused on the role of the African Standby Force in Africa’s changing security environment.

The AU Commission said the deal is an important step in strengthening Africa’s Peace and Security Architecture. AU Political Affairs, Peace and Security officials said it should support stronger collective action, while AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described it as a major moment for the framework. He urged the standby force to adapt to evolving threats and improve the coherence of continental and regional responses.

The African Standby Force is part of the AU’s security framework for preventive deployment, peace support operations and crisis response. The new arrangement is intended to clarify cooperation between the AU, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms as African states face increasingly complex security risks.
