Africa: AU Asks Somalia to Nominate Delegates for Talks On Aussom's Future

AllAfrica, carrying a Shabelle Media Network report from Addis Ababa dated July 24, 2026, reported that the African Union has asked Somalia to quickly name delegates for consultations on the future of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM. The request comes amid funding pressures that the AU says are creating uncertainty over whether the mission can continue at its current scale.

According to the report, the consultations stem from a July 8 decision by the AU Peace and Security Council to form a task force to assess strategic options for AUSSOM. Technical-level talks were scheduled in Addis Ababa from July 22 to July 24, with participation expected from Somali government officials, AUSSOM, the U.N. Support Office in Somalia, the U.N. Office to the African Union, and countries that provide troops and police.

The process is expected to continue in Kampala, Uganda, with meetings of military and police chiefs on July 29, defence ministers on July 30, and an extraordinary summit of leaders from troop-contributing countries on July 31. The AU asked Somalia to provide delegates’ names and official roles to help arrange administrative, protocol and security requirements.

Shabelle reported that the review will consider operational, political, financial and legal issues, including force structure, logistics, risks and Somalia’s security transition. The outcome could influence how the AU, Somalia and international partners manage the mission while Somali security forces are expected to assume greater responsibility for the country’s security.
