What the report says

The African Union is launching the continent’s first credit rating agency in Mauritius, with the new Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) set to open in Port Louis, according to reporting distributed by AllAfrica from Radio France Internationale. The AU says the agency is intended to provide an alternative to the major global rating firms by using African expertise, data and local economic context when assessing borrowers.

AfCRA is expected to rate sovereign issuers, financial institutions and private companies, and the AU says it will operate independently with funding from shareholder capital and its own operations. The bloc argues that a homegrown agency could offer investors more balanced assessments while helping African governments and companies improve access to capital markets. The launch comes eight years after the AU first backed the idea.

The move comes amid long-running criticism from African leaders and finance experts that the dominant international agencies do not adequately reflect conditions on the continent and can move too quickly to downgrade countries during crises. Those firms deny bias and say they apply the same standards globally. As broader context, the AU has said the need for better borrowing terms has grown as public debt has risen across Africa and debt-service costs have increased sharply.

The AU also says AfCRA could help fill a coverage gap, noting that 23 African economies currently do not have ratings from the three major agencies.
