Achola, Angura Rally Residents of Bukedi Sub-region to Embrace Coffee, Cocoa Farming

What the report says
Tororo, Uganda — Pallisa District Woman MP Catherine Achola and Tororo South County MP Fredrick Angura used a burial ceremony in Akalait village, Tororo District, to encourage residents of Bukedi sub-region to move into coffee and cocoa farming. According to Dokolo Post, the two lawmakers said the crops could offer a better route out of poverty than reliance on subsistence agriculture.
Achola, who was chief mourner at the funeral of 95-year-old Anyokorit Kolofridah, linked the patience needed in farming to the long-term effort required in education. She urged parents to prioritize schooling for their children and argued that coffee can be grown even on small plots of land. She also said she would work with Angura to connect Tororo farmers to more seedlings.
Angura, in turn, praised Achola’s outreach beyond her own district and called on his constituents to abandon farming methods that keep Bukedi poor. He also raised education issues, saying schools should avoid charging parents for activities already covered by government capitation, and he backed the reassignment of teachers from better-staffed schools to understaffed ones while new recruits are added.
The remarks reflect a broader push by some regional leaders to promote agricultural cash crops and improve household incomes in eastern Uganda. The publication also noted comments attributed to other senior political figures supporting coffee growing and seedling distribution, underscoring the issue’s prominence in local development discussions.
