What the report says

About 25,000 people marched in Madrid on Saturday in support of Spain’s public pension system, according to Al Jazeera, as pension-related concerns fed into wider protests seen in several European countries. The demonstration came ahead of Spain’s general election next month and reflected worries that pension policy could change depending on the result.

The rally brought together pensioners and supporters who walked from Atocha train station to Gran Via, carrying messages urging the government to protect retirement benefits. The protesters want pensions to keep rising in line with inflation and are also calling for action to close the gender pension gap. Al Jazeera reported that the country’s pension system is under pressure from an ageing population, a low birth rate, wage stagnation and a shrinking ratio of workers to retirees.

The issue has become politically sensitive. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused the opposition Popular Party of wanting to weaken inflation-linked pension increases, while PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo has said his party would continue to raise pensions with inflation if elected. Sanchez says his government would protect pensions and argues the system remains affordable.

Al Jazeera also noted that Spain’s monthly pension bill reached a record level this year, underscoring why the debate matters for public finances and retirement security. More broadly, the rally reflects a familiar European tension between rising social spending needs and pressure on state budgets.
