What the report says

ABC Capital Bank has filed a defamation suit in the High Court in Kampala against former Uganda Cranes captain Andy Mwesigwa, saying he made false and damaging public claims during a dispute over a loan tied to Amesco High School in Wakiso. The bank says the statements were carried on media and social platforms, including Umoja Standard, Galaxy FM, TikTok and YouTube, and accused it of working with “sports mafias” and charging an unlawful interest rate.

According to the bank’s pleadings, the disagreement centres on a Shs480 million term loan that was scheduled in 2020 and later became the subject of recovery proceedings. ABC Capital says Mwesigwa did not keep up with repayments, that penalties and interest continued to accrue under the contract, and that the account was written off in 2024 without canceling the debt. The bank says its records show the amount due had risen substantially by May 2026, while Mwesigwa has previously sought court protection over the property used as security.

ABC Capital is asking the court to declare Mwesigwa liable for defamation, stop him from making further statements about the bank, and order an apology and retraction. It is also seeking damages, interest and costs. The bank argues the comments harmed its reputation and were made while the loan dispute was already before court. The allegations in the suit have not yet been determined, and the claims remain subject to court review.
