Wired reports that Starling, a two-person sound design startup led by Joel Corelitz and Colin Coogan, has been experimenting with a way to make microwave alerts less abrasive without requiring manufacturers to add new parts. The idea targets a familiar irritation in kitchens: the sharp, repetitive beep produced by many microwave ovens when cooking ends or buttons are pressed.

According to Wired, Starling’s approach uses the existing microcontroller and passive piezoelectric buzzer already found in most microwaves. Instead of changing hardware, the designers alter the code that drives the buzzer, producing short trills, frequency sweeps, arpeggios and softer button-feedback sounds. Corelitz demonstrated the concept using software the pair built, called Microwave Sound Bench, along with a simple Arduino-based test setup connected to piezo buzzers.

The article explains why the problem has persisted: piezo buzzers are extremely cheap, simple and widely used across consumer electronics, while full speakers would add cost in a competitive appliance market. Starling argues that manufacturers could improve the user experience largely through programming choices, though adoption would depend on appliance makers being willing to update device code.

Wired also cites Richard Hughes, a former Whirlpool user-experience designer and now a Volvo digital design lead, who said many appliance companies have limited in-house sound design expertise and often carry over old behavior specifications across products. The broader significance is that small audio details may become a product differentiator, especially as brands look for low-cost ways to make everyday devices feel less annoying and more polished.
