What the report says

USA Today reported that Athletics rookie infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer was placed on the 10-day injured list after undergoing surgery for a ruptured testicle. The club announced the move Tuesday, July 21, following an injury suffered during Oakland’s 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix on Monday, July 20.

According to the report, Kuroda-Grauer was injured in the fifth inning when he fouled a pitch that ricocheted into him. He remained down briefly near home plate, then continued the at-bat and hit a line-drive single to right-center. He later left the game, with Donovan Walton taking over defensively at third base in the bottom of the seventh inning.

USA Today said Kuroda-Grauer went 2-for-3 in the game, including his first major-league home run, raising his batting average to .417. The Athletics said he had emergency surgery Monday night at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix and was resting comfortably afterward.

The injury interrupts a strong start to Kuroda-Grauer’s major-league career. He debuted June 29 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and recorded three hits in that game, according to USA Today. Through 16 big-league games, he had eight multi-hit performances, making his absence significant for an Athletics club that had been getting immediate production from the rookie infielder.
