A Real Gold Rush — Swatch’s Apollo 11 MoonSwatch Sets A Wild New Record: 1.2 Million Applicants For 1,969 Pieces - Fratello Watches

What the report says
Fratello Watches reported on July 24 that Swatch drew about 1.2 million applications for its limited Apollo 11 MoonSwatch release, a commemorative model tied to the 1969 lunar landing. The watch is being produced in 1,969 pieces worldwide, priced at CHF 500, and Fratello says each example includes 11 grams of Moonshine Gold, Omega’s proprietary 18-karat gold alloy.
According to the report, Swatch opened an online application window from July 16 until midnight on July 21. Demand was high enough that the application site briefly struggled on the first night. With 1.2 million applicants for fewer than 2,000 watches, the pool works out to more than 600 prospective buyers for each available piece.
Fratello said Swatch used a 32-question process called ESTA, short for Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application, rather than a standard queue or simple lottery. The article described the questionnaire as part marketing stunt and part screening tool, including references aimed at the wider watch industry. Swatch’s selection process, as reported by Fratello, will consider correct quiz answers, individually reviewed open responses, and completion timing linked to hidden logic in some questions.
Winners are expected to be notified starting July 27, and selected applicants will have 48 hours to complete the purchase. The release matters beyond the small production run because the MoonSwatch line has repeatedly generated unusually broad consumer attention for a watch collaboration, and this gold-themed Apollo 11 edition appears to have extended that momentum through scarcity, online participation, and industry-focused publicity.
