The immediate trigger is a civil service preliminary exam held in April, after July results led candidates to allege that leaked answer sheets and unusually low scores among some successful applicants pointed to possible manipulation.

Protesters are demanding that the exam be cancelled and rerun, that the case be handed to India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, and that broader recruitment irregularities be addressed. The Jharkhand government says its Criminal Investigation Department is already probing the matter, while the state public service commission has delayed the next stage of the exam. Its chairman resigned on 22 July and has been questioned, and investigators are also examining the role of a private firm involved in part of the process.

The BBC says the protest reflects wider frustration among young Indians facing long waits for government jobs, which are seen as a route to security and social status. Similar anger was recently seen in Delhi over exam leaks. In Ranchi, the agitation has also drawn political support: the BJP and Congress have both backed the students in some form, though many protesters say they want the movement to remain student-led and free of party control.
