‘A Man Like Sam’ brings a powerful story of inclusion home

Upasuaji International premiered its documentary “A Man Like Sam” at Century Cinema Acacia in Kampala over the weekend, bringing home a film centered on Samuel Mugabi, a Ugandan man with Down syndrome. According to Sqoop Uganda, the screening was hosted by Upasuaji International founder and executive director Lynsay Balumuka, who also served as executive producer.

The film traces Mugabi’s path toward greater independence and uses his experience to question common assumptions about intellectual disabilities. Sqoop Uganda reported that the documentary combines Sam’s perspective with contributions from his family, Balumuka and Diana Mutoni, while highlighting the role of family support, parental advocacy and community acceptance in helping people with Down syndrome live with dignity.

The premiere also served as a learning moment for musician and filmmaker Maurice Kirya, who said he came away with a better understanding of Down syndrome. Mugabi, meanwhile, used the event to stress that Down syndrome is not a disease and to call for more support. The screening was presented as part of Upasuaji International’s “Advocacy on Screen” initiative, which aims to reduce stigma and promote inclusion across East Africa.

Sqoop Uganda also noted that the documentary has already received recognition on the festival circuit, including awards and nominations in Europe and elsewhere. The article said its international run is continuing, with a nomination at the “I Will Tell” International Film Festival in London scheduled for September 2026.
