A Final Fantasy VI Remake Could Be Tricky To Make According To Final Fantasy Directors - Game Informer

Game Informer reported that two leading Final Fantasy creatives have recently tempered expectations for a possible remake of Final Fantasy VI, even as fan interest grows following Square Enix’s long-running Final Fantasy VII Remake project. The article, published July 27, 2026, centers on comments from Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi and Final Fantasy XIV director and Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida.

According to Game Informer, Hamaguchi said in June that he is currently focused on finishing Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the planned 2027 conclusion to the remake trilogy. He acknowledged seeing calls online for him to lead a Final Fantasy VI remake, but suggested such a project might be better suited to another creator within Square Enix. In a separate Bloomberg exchange cited by Game Informer, Hamaguchi also indicated his next work would not be a remake and floated possibilities such as a smaller project, a new Final Fantasy title or a new major franchise.

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin, Yoshida added that remaking Final Fantasy VI would be a major undertaking because of the original game’s size and scope. He said comparable remakes of entries such as Final Fantasy VI, VIII or IX could potentially require more installments than the Final Fantasy VII Remake series.

Game Informer noted that neither director ruled out a Final Fantasy VI remake outright.
