The Associated Press reported that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have a reduced role as training camp begins after being injured in a two-vehicle crash earlier this month. The team said Saturday, the opening day of camp, that Shanahan sustained a concussion and other injuries in the July 14 collision in Palo Alto, California, and was taken to a hospital afterward.

According to AP, Palo Alto police Lt. Nicholas Martinez said the other driver did not require hospitalization, investigators found no indication that either driver was impaired, both drivers cooperated, and no citations were issued. 49ers general manager John Lynch said Shanahan’s injuries included a concussion, broken nose, broken ribs and a hand injury, and that doctors will decide when he can resume full duties.

Lynch said Shanahan may be present when practice begins Sunday, but he is not expected to lead practices or team meetings until he progresses through a concussion protocol similar to what players follow. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will help run the team with coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer. Lynch did not provide a firm return date but said the team expects Shanahan back well before the Sept. 11 season opener in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams.

Shanahan is entering his 10th season leading San Francisco. AP noted that the 49ers have reached two Super Bowls and two other NFC championship games during his tenure, and that his 91 combined regular-season and playoff wins rank third in franchise history behind George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
