The San Francisco Chronicle reported that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was seriously hurt in a two-vehicle crash in Palo Alto on July 14 and will have a reduced role as training camp begins. Citing the team and a league source, the Chronicle said Shanahan sustained a concussion as well as fractures to his nose, hand and ribs. ESPN also reported he received 40 facial stitches and broke three ribs.

According to Palo Alto police information cited by the Chronicle, officers responded at 6:13 p.m. near Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue, close to downtown Palo Alto. Police said no citations were issued and impairment was not suspected for either driver. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated, and Shanahan was taken to a local hospital. The crash involved Shanahan’s black Tesla and a blue Mercedes SUV, according to fire dispatch audio reviewed by the Chronicle.

General manager John Lynch said Saturday that Shanahan has been at the 49ers’ facility since the crash but has not been cleared to resume full coaching duties because of lingering concussion symptoms. Lynch said the team is treating Shanahan similarly to a player under the NFL’s concussion protocol. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the coordinators will handle head-coaching responsibilities early in camp, though Shanahan may appear on the practice field before fully returning.

The situation matters because the 49ers are opening training camp with their longtime head coach limited. Shanahan, 46, is entering his 10th season with San Francisco and ranks among the franchise’s winningest coaches. Lynch said the team expects Shanahan to travel for the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, but added that his recovery timeline depends on medical progress.
