BBC Sport reported that American rookie Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open in Minnesota on Sunday, securing his first PGA Tour title by three shots over world number one Scottie Scheffler. Koivun finished at 25 under par at TPC Twin Cities, with Scheffler second on 22 under after a closing 63.

Koivun, 21, was playing only his third event as a professional. According to the BBC, he moved into control on Saturday with a 10-under 61 that gave him a three-stroke advantage, then extended the margin to five during the final round. Scheffler, a four-time major champion, cut into the lead with a burst of birdies on the back nine, including three in a row to start that stretch and two more over the closing holes.

The pressure did not derail Koivun. He added a birdie at the 16th and completed a final-round 66 to hold off Scheffler. The BBC quoted Koivun as saying he heard spectators warning that “Scottie’s coming” but tried to block it out and rely on his own game.

Denny McCarthy, Brian Harman and Chandler Phillips of the United States tied for third with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama at 20 under. The result is a significant early breakthrough for Koivun, who the BBC noted had helped Auburn win a U.S. college championship less than two months earlier and had previously been ranked as the world’s top amateur.
