21-year-old Jackson Koivun fends off Scottie Scheffler to earn first career PGA Tour win at 3M Open - Yahoo Sports
What the report says
Yahoo Sports reported that Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open on Sunday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, claiming his first PGA Tour title only 24 days after turning professional. The 21-year-old, formerly the world’s top-ranked amateur, closed with a bogey-free 66 to finish at 25-under par, a tournament scoring record, and beat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three shots. The win came in Koivun’s third Tour start as a professional and carried a $1.584 million prize.
Koivun entered the final round with a three-stroke advantage after shooting 61 on Saturday, including a tournament-record 28 on the back nine. Scheffler began Sunday six shots behind but quickly applied pressure, making early birdies and adding three in a row around the turn. He finished with a 63 and reached 22-under, briefly trimming Koivun’s lead to two after a birdie at the last.
Yahoo Sports said Koivun stayed composed despite hearing reminders from the gallery that Scheffler was closing. He opened with an early birdie, continued a long stretch of greens hit in regulation, saved from a bunker at the par-5 12th, and added a birdie at No. 16 after giving himself an eagle chance. Even an errant final tee shot did not threaten the result.
The victory adds to a rapid rise for Koivun, who won two national team titles at Auburn before turning pro after the U.S. Open. Scheffler, meanwhile, recorded his fifth runner-up finish of the season and remains in the FedExCup race, according to Yahoo Sports.
