2026 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Navi Pillay

What the report says
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, according to Al Jazeera’s report from Oslo. The committee said the South African jurist was recognized for her work promoting peace and international law, and for helping ensure that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
In its announcement, the committee argued that international law is especially important amid rising global conflict and pressure on international institutions. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said the legal system is facing significant strain, underscoring the role of judges and courts in preserving order and accountability. Al Jazeera reported that the prize was announced on Friday as the 125th Nobel Peace Prize.
Pillay, who is 85, has a long career in international justice and human rights. She previously served as a defence lawyer for Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists, worked on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and served as the United Nations high commissioner for human rights. She currently sits on the International Court of Justice in the case involving Myanmar and genocide allegations, adding to the significance of her selection. The article noted that the Nobel Committee received 287 nominations this year.
