2026 MLB trade deadline bold predictions: Tigers send Tarik Skubal to NL contender; Yankees, Cubs get busy - CBS Sports

What the report says
CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa previewed the approaching 2026 MLB trade deadline with a set of speculative “bold predictions,” emphasizing that the deadline is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. ET. With the draft completed and clubs moving into deadline planning, Axisa framed the next two weeks as a period when front offices are likely to accelerate trade talks.
The most prominent prediction is that the Detroit Tigers will still move ace Tarik Skubal despite a strong run since June 1 that has brought them closer to the American League playoff picture. Axisa argued that Detroit’s uncertain postseason odds could push president of baseball operations Scott Harris toward seeking multiple young players rather than risking Skubal’s eventual departure in free agency for only draft-pick compensation. He identified the Braves as a team with a major need but predicted the Dodgers as the landing spot because of their title ambitions and prospect depth.
Other predicted activity includes the Cubs adding multiple pitchers from a Mets team described as ready to sell, with Freddy Peralta and several relievers mentioned as possible fits. Axisa also predicted the Giants will extend Luis Arraez rather than trade him, while moving Robbie Ray; the Mariners will deal Luis Castillo to address offensive needs; and the Padres will sell some pieces but keep closer Mason Miller.
The column also forecast a busy Yankees deadline, with at least five additions to the major-league roster, and projected that the White Sox will seek a controllable starter. For Toronto, Axisa predicted the Blue Jays will trade three of Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, George Springer and Daulton Varsho, while trying to keep Gausman.
