2 meteor showers expected to peak this week, but a bright moon will steal the show - FOX Weather

What the report says

Fox Weather reported that two meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids, are expected to reach peak activity overnight from Thursday into Friday, but viewing conditions will be poor for many people because the moon will still be nearly full. The outlet said the peak comes one night after July’s full Buck Moon, leaving the moon about 98% illuminated and likely to wash out many fainter meteors.

Citing the American Meteor Society, Fox Weather said the Southern Delta Aquariids are active from July 23 to Aug. 23 and are most favorable for observers in the southern tropics. That shower can produce a steady stream of meteors, but they are generally dim and not often accompanied by lingering trails or fireballs. The Alpha Capricornids, active from July 12 to Aug. 12, are weaker overall and usually produce no more than about five meteors per hour at peak, though they are associated with brighter fireballs.

The best viewing window, according to the report, is between midnight and dawn. Fox Weather said skywatchers in the southern United States, Mexico and the Caribbean will have the best chance, especially if they keep the moon behind them or block it with a tree, building or hill while looking toward the darkest part of the sky. No telescope or binoculars are needed.

For those who miss this week’s showers because of clouds or moonlight, Fox Weather noted that the Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight from Aug. 12 to 13 under moonless skies, offering a stronger viewing opportunity.
