19 UPDF Generals Set to Retire Next Week

Nineteen senior officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) are scheduled to retire next week in a formal ceremony at State House Entebbe, according to Watchdog Uganda. The event is set for Thursday, August 20, 2026, and is expected to be presided over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is also the commander-in-chief of the force.

The group includes several well-known generals and brigadiers, among them Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho, Maj. Gen. Geofrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, Maj. Gen. Apollo Kasiita-Gowa and Maj. Gen. Leopold Eric Kyanda. The remaining officers on the list are brigadier generals, bringing the total retirement cohort to 19 general officers in the 2026/27 financial year.

Col. Chris Magezi, the acting director of defence public information, said the general-officer send-off will close the UPDF’s August 2026 retirement exercise. He said 1,817 officers and militants are retiring in total this month, including senior officers, junior officers and enlisted personnel who have already been processed at Mbuya and at service and division headquarters around the country.

The report says the UPDF views the retirements as a formal end to long military careers and an opportunity to recognise service in defending Uganda and supporting regional peace. More broadly, such scheduled retirements are part of routine military turnover, helping refresh leadership while marking transitions for personnel leaving active duty.
