146 Districts Set for Women Committee Elections

The Electoral Commission has completed nominations for women committee candidates at district and city level across Uganda, setting up elections for August 28, 2026. According to the commission, the exercise covered all 146 districts and now moves to the next stage of the grassroots women’s leadership polls, as reported by Nile Post.

Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the district and city contests will use a secret ballot and ballot papers, unlike lower-level women committee elections that have already been held at village, parish and sub-county levels. He also said the law requires this voting method once the process reaches district and national levels.

The elections will be decided by a limited electoral college rather than the broader public. Nile Post reported that the voting body will include sub-county women committee chairpersons in each district, plus a woman representative of persons with disabilities. That means the size of the electorate will vary depending on the number of sub-counties in a district.

Campaigning is scheduled to run from August 5 to August 27. The commission has asked candidates and electoral college members to follow its guidelines and maintain discipline. The process matters because it helps choose women leaders at district and city level within Uganda’s local governance structures.
