14 standouts from Day 1 of Detroit Lions training camp - Pride Of Detroit

What the report says
Pride of Detroit reported that the Detroit Lions began their sixth training camp under coach Dan Campbell on Wednesday with a 90-minute opening practice conducted in shells. The session was described as clean, with no injuries or fights noted in the report, though several prominent players were absent, including running back Jahmyr Gibbs and starting safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.
According to the report, Detroit’s passing-game stars were among the most noticeable performers. Amon-Ra St. Brown made a difficult sideline catch early in 7-on-7 work, Jameson Williams produced the day’s top highlight on a contested deep reception of roughly 40 yards, and tight end Sam LaPorta appeared to be moving well after a back issue while taking most first-team offensive snaps. Quarterback Jared Goff’s top targets therefore offered early reminders of the Lions’ offensive depth even without Gibbs participating.
On defense, Pride of Detroit highlighted cornerback Nick Whiteside as a surprise contributor after multiple pass breakups while working mostly with reserve units. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. also drew attention because of how many first-team reps he received opposite D.J. Reed, even though he was tested by Detroit’s top receivers. The report said Reed looked healthy and was rarely targeted, while linebacker roles also came into focus: Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez handled the first-team work during team periods.
The opening practice matters because it offered the first look at roster competitions and role changes entering camp. Pride of Detroit noted opportunities for players such as Rakestraw, Whiteside, Sione Vaki and Tyler Lacy, with absences and limited participation giving others more chances to make an early impression before padded practices begin.
