What the report says

USA Today reported that Midwest Poultry Services L.P. recalled nearly 1.6 million dozen white-shell and brown-shell cage-free eggs because of possible Salmonella enteritidis contamination. The recall was issued July 22 and involved eggs from the company’s Texas farms, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall report cited by the outlet.

The recalled cartons can be identified by codes printed in date-coding ink on either side of the carton. USA Today reported that only eggs marked with P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian date from 157 through 184 are included. The company said it had not received reports of illnesses linked to the eggs as of July 22, and the issue was found through environmental monitoring and root-cause review. Midwest Poultry Services was not distributing fresh eggs from its Texas farms at that time.

The products were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana and Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi, as well as smaller retailers. The FDA report also said eggs went to foodservice customers and retailers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Midwest Poultry Services listed a consumer phone line at 574-405-9531 during weekday business hours.

For context, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, typically beginning six hours to six days after exposure. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk of severe illness.
