CBS News reported that Midwest Poultry Services is recalling about 1.6 million eggs because of a possible Salmonella Enteritidis contamination risk, citing a Wednesday notice from the Food and Drug Administration. The recall applies to white-shell and cage-free shell eggs from the company’s Texas farms that were sent to retailers in six states. Midwest Poultry Services said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled eggs.

According to the FDA notice described by CBS News, the affected eggs were produced and distributed from June 6 through July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 to Aug. 17. They were sold under several brands, including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups. The recalled eggs reached Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores in Louisiana and Texas, Brookshire Grocery stores in Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and some smaller retail outlets.

The company said it found the concern through environmental monitoring and follow-up analysis at two Texas farms, CBS News reported. Midwest Poultry Services has stopped distributing fresh eggs from those farms while the recall is underway. The FDA said no other products from the company are included in this recall.

Consumers are being advised not to eat the affected eggs and to return them to the store where they were bought for a refund. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and infections may be more severe for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
